Hello, my name is Katherine Feemster. I am the owner and CEO of The Greenfire Company.
The old saying “see one, do one, teach one” is a fitting description for my career evolution. I remember thinking I was the bee’s knees when I placed a tricky catheter or intubated four species of animals in a day. But on one of the last emergency cases I assisted in, I didn’t lay a hand on the patient. Instead, I stood at the shoulder of one of our newest team members and talked her through administering an intravenous sedative to a seizing patient. The memory of her shaking hands at the start of the emergency and her look of blooming confidence at the end is always going to be worth more to me as a mentor and teacher than all of the memories I have with the syringe in my own hand.
Infectious disease and vaccine research was my gateway to appreciating medicine’s complexity. I have worked with projects on Tuberculosis, HIV, Zika virus, Dengue fever, and Covid-19 (one of my favorites was on CMV vaccine research). I found, though, that my core interest and focus was, and is, really in wanting to know more about how that research is applicable to the world at large. That led me to delve into the public health field and pursue graduate school. There I developed excellent research skills and the skills needed to work well within ever-changing group dynamics and tight deadlines. It is also where I truly learned how to learn, and found in that one of the most valuable skills a writer can bring to any project.
As a freelance medical writer, I bring the combined strengths of my years of hands-on experience, my education, and my enjoyment of the learning and the teaching processes. I am here to help you with your HCP and patient education projects or your public health outreach initiatives. I look forward to talking with you soon about your own organization’s needs.
